Who we are

Daniel's Promise charity was established in the UK in 2009. Denise Gwatkin, Caroline Cardew-Smith and Jill Graydon are the trustees and fundraisers.

Denise Gwatkin who helped set up Daniels Promise.

Denise Gwatkin is a full time tennis coach to adults and children. She had a competitive junior tennis career and more recently spent 10 years playing for GB in the veterans’ team which involved some great trips all over the world but none to any really poor countries. In recent years she has had to stop competing because of trouble with her back. During the period of convalescnce following a back operation she did an Alpha course and is now a "fledgling" Christian!! In July 2007 she had a vision of teaching tennis to children in the dust of Africa. Consequently in March 2008 she went to Uganda and spent a month teaching tennis in schools in Kampala. While there she met Daniel Ntale, who runs KSEM, and visited the boy’s home. She was enormously impressed by Daniel and his friend’s efforts to voluntarily help underprivileged children to have a better life and resolved to try and do as much as she could to help them on her return.

Caroline Cardew-Smith BA runs a successful contract cleaning business. In 2008 Caroline made a New Year’s resolution to get involved with a charity and Daniel’s Promise seemed the perfect opportunity to use her experience and resources to help the charity. In February 2009 Caroline and Denise went to Kampala and apart from being impressed by meeting Daniel, the KSEM team and the boys in the home, she also was inspired by the colourful paper bead jewellery. She organised through Brenda, Daniel’s wife, for a small group of local women to make paper bead jewellery for her to sell in the UK. The work helps the women support their families and the profits go to the charity. The jewellery is for sale at gift fairs, events and on her website www.moidesigns.co.uk (Opens in a new window)

KSEM

Daniel Ntale In 2000 Daniel started a free football club KSEM and ran training sessions for local children with the ideal of helping the community through sport and education underpinned with Christian values. It was at these sessions that he met so many children in desperate need of a home that he started to take in some of them to live with his own family. He used his income from his career as an international professional footballer, by 2006 he had taken in three boys and did not have room to take any more, but the need was so great that he rented a house and started a home for boys. He gave up his football career in order to dedicate as much time as he can to the charity and he now runs his own business supplying sporting kits to teams throughout Uganda. Daniel is a surrogate father to all of the children and the boys in the home all call him ‘Daddy’. He is married to Brenda and they have four girls, the youngest child, born in 2008, was named Denise in honour of Denise Gwatkin for her help and support! For more information view Daniel's page on this site.
