Abdul born 1997
We are three brothers. We used to live with both our parents until our father was arrested for political reasons. After his arrest our mother started hiding and went back to the village. We lived with our neighbours but later dropped out of school because no one could pay our school fees. We then started selling metal scrap to earn a living. Later someone took us to KSEM orphanage and we were taken back to school. We were given new clothes and beds. There’s enough food for us and we play very much. We watch television which we did not even have
Additional information:
His other brothers are Abdul Sebunya and Ahmed Kagimu

Ambrose
Ambrose born 1996 says:
Ambrose’s father is a subsistence farmer and the mother is not working because of medical problems. It is therefore the father who has to look after a family of 8. He could not pay the fees of these children.
Ben’s family disintegrated due to domestic violence and the mother was single handedly looking after 5 children. Because of abject poverty, she could not afford to educate her children alongside footing house rent bills for a single room.
Ben joined KSEM through a friend of Daniel’s.

Yosia
Yosia Nalumenya age
IYosia is Elia’s older brother, his story is similar, but being the first born he had to take care of the house after his mother was made to leave. He did all the hard work - fetching water from the well, digging, and cutting grass for the cow the father owned. Life was really hard, he had no childhood.
He says he is enjoying life in the orphanage as he is one of the youngest with no responsibility. He is being taken care of - he can eat, sleep well, he enjoys life at school and mixing with a lot of young kids, his freedom is back.

Shaban
Shaban says:
I was born in 1997, my father died of hunger when I was 7 years old. My sister and I dropped out of school to make some money to keep us. We used to sell foodstuffs yet we could also fail to have meals. I could not play with other children because I had dirty clothes and I could not find time to play.
I was brought to KSEM orphanage where my life has changed. Today I can sleep well, we eat regularly and watch television and go to church. I have a lot of friends now and we play very much. I now go to school and I live a happy life.
